Coffee
Coffee

Coffee is a genus of flowering plants in the family Rubiaceae. Within the Coffea genus, there are several species that are cultivated for their seeds (coffee beans) that are used to produce the popular beverage, coffee. Some of the well-known coffee species include Coffea arabica (Arabica coffee) and Coffea canephora (commonly known as Robusta coffee). These two species are the most widely grown and consumed for coffee production globally. For our library, we use Coffea arabica, also known as Arabian coffee or Gulf coffee. It is not actually named after its region of origin. The term "Arabic" in "Arabic coffee" refers to the method of preparation and the cultural association with the Arab world rather than the region where the coffee is native. The plant is native to the highland regions of Ethiopia in East Africa but has since found ideal climates for growth worldwide. We source our coffee from Venezuela, where Coffea arabica was introduced in the 18th century and today is of the most popular varieties the country grows.
